"Never settle for less" was a quote I've recently adopted to underline my life and future. Despite this recent recognition, looking further, it is a mantra that has molded me into the person I am today. Whether it entails a given situation, a particular person, or in regards to an event, I always sought growth and progression within it. I guess you could call me an overachiever, but I like to perceive myself as a go-getter. My go-getter personality today has led me to continuing my adventure to self-discover and self-improvement, therefore inspiring me to immerse myseLf in an unfamiliar culture by studying abroad in South Korea.
I applied to the Freeman Study Abroad Scholarship with full uncertainty on whether I would receive it or not. The Shidler College has molded a competitive, yet inspiring environment for students like myself to push beyond their limits and to strive for greater. While entering my junior year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, I knew I had to give back to the Shidler College in the best way I could--which is what led me to applying for the Freeman Scholarship. I strived to not only represent the Shidler College Business but also the Hawaii community on a global scale. With that being said, I am eternally grateful for this opportunity Mr. Freeman has given me.
Thank you, Mahalo, and 감사합니다 [gamsahamnida] to Mr. Freeman for his generous donation to my study abroad journey in Seoul National University! I hope to share the Aloha spirit with those I meet, and in turn, becoming more globally aware by learning from them as well. It is an honor to have been selected as a recipient of the Freeman Scholarship and I look forward to sharing my experiences with you all.
Best,
Maurice Berbano
